One of the things that I love about my job is that every day is different. It must be said though, some days are more different that others, and perched precariously on the bumper of an old camper-van with a laptop on my knee and the sun in my eyes I was starting to think this was going to be one of those “more different” days.
How did I get myself in this position? Well, it’s Google’s fault and the story starts back in 2003
2003 was the year that Google launched the Adsense programme. It’s older sibling, Adwords had already been running for 2½ years and giving advertisers the ability to drop their message alongside Google search results. Adsense gave Adwords the opportunity to spread beyond the Google results and gave site-owners a way or earning revenue from Adsense ads shown on their site.
Adsense was a game changer for site owners and online publishers as it was so simple to administer. Rather than spending your time selling adverts and chasing payments you could just and the Adsense code to your site and wait for the cheque to arrive the following month.
I can’t exactly recall when I first added Adsense code to a website, but on Monday 7th of July 2003 our account generated its first revenue: An amazing £4.27. I’m happy to report that we’ve significantly increased the amount of Adsense revenue we generate, and help others to generate, since then!
Fast forward a decade and Google is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Adsense. As part of the celebrations Google are talking to successful publishers about their involvement with the programme and I was asked to take part.
So why the camper van?
One of the more successful projects involving Adsense that we have worked on has beenC4Caravans.com – a marketplace for Caravans, Motorhomes and Static Caravans. Thanks to Google Adsense that site has helped tens of thousands of owners to sell their caravan without having to pay the listing fees or commission that other websites charge. It’s also allowed the site to grow from a pet ‘weekend project’ in to significant player in leisure vehicles market.
Over the 10 years that we have worked with Google Adsense the programme has certainly developed, but so has our involvement with it. We’re now lucky enough to have the support of the Adsense Account management team and the insight and advantages that brings. That involvement is set to develop further over the coming weeks and we are looking forward to making some announcements about how we can help others benefit from the decade of Adsense experience that we have built up. Stay tuned.
