Slow loading ads annoy users and lose publishers money. Smart publishers keep their sites fast and ensure that their most valuable ads load quickly. We developed the OKO ad speed tools to help our publishers increase ad revenue by identifying what slows down their ad loading, allowing them to fix bottlenecks, increase viewability and improve revenues. We’ve now made a beta version of the Ad Speed tool available to all for free.

Who is the ad speed tool aimed at?
How to use the tool
Fill in your details and provide a URL to test. “money” pages tend to work better than homepages (On a blog, for instance, a post page will usually provide more useful results than the home page). The test takes a few minutes to run whilst you page is analysed, after which a link to the results is emailed to you.
What to do with the results
- Check load created by ads
The resulting report will first give you an impression of the overall load that is created by the ads on your page by comparing load times with and without an ad blocker running. This is purely informational, allowing you to weigh up the overall impact of ads.
- Check the order of your key monetization scripts
The Ad Speed tool will list the monetization scripts that it recognises, putting them in the order that they are called on the page. The timing column shows you how long after the page begins loading each script is requested. As a rule of thumb the scripts that have the most financial impact for you should be higher up on that list. If valuable scripts are being pushed down then look at where in code each is called.
- See what loads before each monetization script
Click each of the monetization scripts for a list of what other assets load first. Your ad-tech probably shouldn’t be the first thing that you load, but many sites load load non-critical scripts high in the page, slowing down the loading of the ads that page for the site. Inspect what loads before each script and decide whether any could be loaded later. We’ve added tips for many common scripts.
